California, San Francisco, to Half Moon Bay

July 5, awake to a forecast of high 90's with a high of 103 in the Fairfield area. It was already near 80 outside our room when we got up. But the good news was the forecast for San Francisco was in the 60's! We had not planned to visit San Francisco, but decided we couldn't be this close and not visit, even though we have both been here several times. We parked in Ghirardelli Square and started to walk around.

First stp was the Maritime museum, but it was closed for renovation. So next to the pier to see the National Martime Park. The BALCLUTHA was getting some work, and the ranger explained they had started to send down the fore topgallant and found it so rotten it couldnt be done. So they brought in a crane barge and were busy getting it down in pieces.

You cannot go to San Francisco and not ride a cable car, so we headed up there, paid $5 each and waited in line for 30 minutes to ride it to China town.

We were looking for lunch, but I fond this kite store, se we browsed a while, and I found a really neat 7ft butterfly kite. Then I had to carry the thing for the rest of the day.

China town is fun, we walked around several blocks, found a place to eat lunch, and a bakery to get some goodies.

Next it was a downhill walk toward the piers, and Fishermans Wharf. We found the JEREMIAH O'BRIEN and looked for a while, but I decided not to go aboard. After a visit to a liberty ship once with Ray Hasbrouck, who served aboard one, I didn't figure I'd learn much more. But it was nice to look at it.

As we walked back down the pier we passed what looked like a video game area, so we walked right by, but at the next door we discovered it was a museum of arcade machines. Among them was this interesting orchestron. We dropped a couple quarters to hear them, and enjoyed seeing several hundred coin operated amusement machines.

We had a short rest on a park bench looking out at the bay, still heavily covered in fog, and no sign of the Golden Gate bridge. Then into the car, after paying $30 for parking, and we headed out of town.

Bonnie wanted to see the section of old Victorian houses called the Painted Ladies, so we stopped and she walked around and took some photos.

Then it was on the road, through a lot of traffic, and on toward Half Moon Bay. I think the coastal ride must be spectacular, but all we saw was fog. We got to our hotel about 7:30. Altough we are one day earlier than planned, this is the end of our trip 'Out West.' Now its a day of rest, then the wedding that motivated this trip, and we head East. We have driven 6,767 miles to get here.
