The full span of the bridge is 5 miles with the longest suspension in the county. It can be extremely trecherous in high winds.
We next went to Sault Ste. Marie for a look at the locks. In the visitor center we saw this interesting 3 dimentional map that shows the depth of the great lakes. With Lake Superior the very deepest at 1725 feet deep and Lake Erie the most shallow with the deepest hole only 66 feet deep.
This is an aerial shot of the locks as they are today. Since the beginning bigger locks have had to be constructed to be able to handle the larger freighters.
We waited to see this 1004 foot long 60 foot wide Bulk carrier freighter the Edwin Gott come into the locks. It took over an hour from her entry from Lake Superior into the canal to her departure into the St. Mary's River. It was freezing cold with a fierce wind that evening.
A smaller tour boat came into the adjacent lock at the same time. It was blowing fiercely across the canals making it difficult for the smaller vessel. It was interesting to see to different kinds of vessels going through.
The Edwin Gott fully in the lock.
Ready to depart-notice the difference in depth a drop of 25 feet.
