Hudson River, part 2

Below Newburgh the river takes a spectacular turn. The surronding area gets very hilly, I guess this is the Catskill Mountains. I was awed by the beauty of this region.

Looking south, just a few miles below Newburgh
I have to remember to look behind me as well- often a rather nice view from the other angle. This is in the area of West Point, and several of the academy buildings are along the river.
Here is a bridge I had never seen, but have heard of, the Bear Mountain bridge.
A nice bit of bridge design.

Below this the river widens out into Haverstraw Bay, and passes the Indian Point nuke station.

Then it passes Croton Point, another special place for me. I attended the Great Hudson River Revival as a boatbuilder exhibitor for several years from about 1978 to 86 or so. Each year I built, and raffled off to support Clearwater, a sea kayak. As part of the show we got to camp out on the grounds (at that time it was partly still an open landfill), but sitting around a campfire with Pete Seger, Utah Phillips, Arlo Guthrie, and a lot of other fine musicians was a real treat.

I tried to take a photo of Croton Point, but it just blends into the rest of the shoreline.

I ended the day at the Tarrytown Marina, just about under the Tappan Zee Bridge, another of those I've driven over too many times.
