As usuall, I was up and out early- started at 6:00AM. Clear sky, no fog, but very
hazy in the dierection of New York City.
|
The first 10 miles or so was very calm, along Yonkers. I was surprised to
see all the abandoned buildings along the river- even a major power plant, with
all the glass broken out, and lots of trash around it. Many of the piers are also
mainly ruins.
This is the bridge over the Harlem river- thats what makes Manhattan an island |
|
Looks like the George Washington Bridge is getting some repair- with its
canvas covering it must be getting sandblasted of its lead paint. Sure seems eaiser to me to
just not let kids chew the steel work of these bridges instead of 'de-leading' them. |
|
Wonder how many sections of scaffolding are around that tower? |
|
Not far down is the museum with the John F Kennedy Aircraft carrier, and it
looks like they have a Concorde as well.
Until about this point the river had been like a mlll pond, but then as I approached the
first of severl ferry piers all hell broke loose- the water surface looked like a blender.
I rocked and rollled, but the engine just hummed and I moved right along at about 7 mph.
I had the tide against me all the way, even turing just about as I rounded the Battery
to be against me up the East river and through Hells Gate. |
|
Looks like a high rent area for such a big bilboard, but an interesting clock. |
|
About as close a view as I got of the Statue of Liberty- I wasn't about to go over there
in all this rough water, I just wanted to slide around the Battery and head north.
Here is one of the high speed catamaran ferries.
|
|
And a smaller and more garish water taxi. |
|
Well, you dont think I could not have a photo of the Broklyn Bridge? |
|
Or a photo of the UN- altough it kind of gets lost in all the rest of the skyline. |
I got up the East River, through Hells Gate, and was out into Long Island sound just before noon.
Another major leg of the trip behind me, some very pretty views along this river, but some
depressing ones as well of all the abandoned industrial property along the rivers.
